We are a small farm mainly dealing with the Ithaca Farmer's Market, Garlic Festivals, and possibly online buyers. CNG promotes small markets and hopes to sever the USDA organic monster.

My friend Ron Khosla told me about it. I go to school in New Paltz, and had the oppotrunity to hear about Hugenot Street Farm and I visited. This is how I heard about it.

Farmland Management and Practices

We use our New Holland Tractor for tillage, in the spring time. For the Garlic we till after harvest.

The garlic hasn't had insect problems in the past. For potatoes, the potato beetle munches alot of our plants, We try killing them on the plant and leaving them there, with our fingers we squash them. Flea beatles eat our mustards, tatsoi's, Asian Greens, and Kale. We tried a home made hot pepper spray last year out of chile peppers and vinegar, it didn't seem to work. For pests in general, we use re-may, or floating row covers.

Blossom end rot on our tomatoes can be a problem. We mulch the tomatoes and give them a steady supply of water. The garlic has not had disease problems.

We use a rain catchment system in our barn. We do not irrigate the garlic or cover crops. A 1000 gallon barrel sits in our barn, an attachment is on the top of the barrel that feeds from a gutter. It hits our barn roof and the rain water goes into the 1000 gallon plastic barrel.

Chemical/Spray Drift and Buffers:
Is there any likelihood of Chemical/Spray drift contamination of your fields? *
Do you have an adequate buffer to protect yourself from potential contamination? *
Please describe your buffer. Be as specific as possible. On all sides, how far is it from your crops to the next closest use (road, conventional crop, residential yard)? Be sure to specify what is grown on neighboring land that is in agricultural use. For example: To the north and east, a wooded area of at least 100 yards separates us from the neighbor's corn fields, to the south is a fallow field at least 100 yards deep separating us from the road, and to the west about 60 feet separates our crops from a field where conventional corn and soybeans are grown. *
To the south, a pasture area of 100 yards separates us from grape growes. There is also a tree line at the end of the 100 yards of pasture and a small private road in betwen the tree line and the conventinally grown grapes. In the East, one field is separated from the neighbor's driveway by a tree line. And another field is separated by 200 to 300 yards of pasture. In the North, a tree line and stream bed (10 yards) separates us from our neighbor's organic timothy rye fields. To the west, the forest runs down towards Seneca Lake, so nothing is being buffered against.

Our farm is working on Garlic as our cash crop. Right now this is our main wish to get certified. The 17 additional acres are pasture-meadow. It has never been cultivated, and what grows here are various shrubs and grasses. I was thinking that in the future it would be convenient to have this land certified in case we do want to expand the plots. We occassionally mow these fields, but only around the cultivated veggie plots.
