I like the idea of farmers inspecting farmers. I have been raising organic produce for about 50 years. The organic inspection process many years ago was a good way to exchange knowledge with other farmers. Hopefully CNG will be the same.

I sheet compost garden waste and veg scraps from our restaurant. I cover an area of 20x30 discing it in for about 1 year. Then apply approx. 1 ton per acre.

I do not use any chemical weed control. Flame weed with propane, hand weed, mulch with clippings.

Tomato hornworm, cabbage worm, and flea beetles are my main problem. I use Pyganic (pyrethrin) and Dipel = B.T I don't use any pest product that is not OMRI listed.

Disease is not usually much of a problem. I use an OMRI approved fungicide when necessary.

Seeds, Transplants and Buffers

How do you select your seeds? CNG standards call for growers to make a good faith effort to locate organically grown seeds by contacting at least 3 major suppliers. *
I save some of my own seeds like okra, tomatoes, and peppers. Otherwise I use all organic seed when possible. When I can't find organic I make sure the seed is untreated and non-GMO.

For my potting mix I just use compost made on the farm. I buy in potting mix from Burpee Organic Seed Starting mix.

Please describe your buffer. Be as specific as possible. On all sides, how far is it from your crops to the next closest use (road, conventional crop, residential yard)? Be sure to specify what is grown on neighboring land that is in agricultural use. For example: To the north and east, a wooded area of at least 100 yards separates us from the neighbor's corn fields, to the south is a fallow field at least 100 yards deep separating us from the road, and to the west about 60 feet separates our crops from a field where conventional corn and soybeans are grown. *
We have 80 acres - surrounded by forest on three sides for miles - with cattle and hay - on north side about 1 mile - our 80 acres are mostly forest with 15 acre close to center that is clear with hay and veg.
