Please briefly tell us why you are applying to be part of the Certified Naturally Grown program: *
I am a farmer passionate about food, farm, and community, dividing my time between growing good food and offering prescription for wellness programs and workshops within my community. While I feel I have been growing to this standard throughout my time farming, I have not pursued a certification. As I dive deeper into growing, expanding on my production, I would like to earn the CNG certification to hold my products to a quality I stand behind, as well as provide my customers with a comfortable purchasing experience, knowing that my products are grown to a measured standard beyond my word. Overall, I am a large supporter of CNG, and I would love for my production to become a part of this movement.

I am utilizing an urban farm plot for my growing. Most of my weed issues involve crab grass, purslane, chick weed,etc. I regularly wheel hoe, scuffle hoe, and hand weed to maintain these issues.

My largest pest challenges are aphids, cabbage moths, potato beetles, and assorted unfavorable worms, as well as woodchucks. As for wood chucks, I trap and rehome them. As for insects and pests alike, I typically try to take care of the issue by hand before it gets out of hand. For larger infestations I typically utilize DE. I have also utilized neem oil in the past. Prior to utilizing DE or neem, I also consider the addition of beneficials. Previously, I have incorporated praying mantis.

My issues with disease include powdery mildew and occasional scorch and burn. I prune as needed, or pull plants if it is too severe. I do not currently utilize any products for disease.

Seeds, Transplants and Buffers

How do you select your seeds? CNG standards call for growers to make a good faith effort to locate organically grown seeds by contacting at least 3 major suppliers. *
I purchase the majority of my seed through Johnnys Selected Seed, Baker Creek Seeds, The Seed Exchange, Fedco, and High Mowing. I do occasionally trade or purchase some plants from like minded growers, double checking their seed sourcing prior to doing so.

Please describe your buffer. Be as specific as possible. On all sides, how far is it from your crops to the next closest use (road, conventional crop, residential yard)? Be sure to specify what is grown on neighboring land that is in agricultural use. For example: To the north and east, a wooded area of at least 100 yards separates us from the neighbor's corn fields, to the south is a fallow field at least 100 yards deep separating us from the road, and to the west about 60 feet separates our crops from a field where conventional corn and soybeans are grown. *
My space is surrounded by woods and behind low traffic buildings in an urban area, creating minimal opportunities for contamination. The area is very low traffic with minimal worries in regards to buffering out contaminates
