Farmland Management and Practices

We use minimal tillage using rotary plowing between seasons, cover cropping and silage tarps, broadforking beds when turning over crops.

Grasses and vines are main weed challenges, dealt with primarily through the use of sheet mulching and cover crops.

Caterpillars and aphids are current main insect challenges. Both are dealt with through physical removal when possible, and by encouraging greater biological diversity and control by growing diverse species to promote predatory insects.

Downy mildew and vine borers are common, we deal with them by selecting resistant varieties and adjusting planting schedule with crops that are less susceptible to these problems.

Please describe your buffer. Be as specific as possible. On all sides, how far is it from your crops to the next closest use (road, conventional crop, residential yard)? Be sure to specify what is grown on neighboring land that is in agricultural use. For example: To the north and east, a wooded area of at least 100 yards separates us from the neighbor's corn fields, to the south is a fallow field at least 100 yards deep separating us from the road, and to the west about 60 feet separates our crops from a field where conventional corn and soybeans are grown. *
On the country grow space, we are about 100 yards to the closest road to the north, about 100 feet to either neighbors property to the east and west, and at least 100 yards of woods to the south. On the city lot, we are about 60 feet to railroad tracks to our east and we have a fence separating us. To our north, there is about 100 feet of open property to the street. There are neighbors to our west with fences separating our properties. There is a road about 20 feet to our south with a fence separating our property.
