Applicant Details

Please briefly tell us why you are applying to be part of the Certified Naturally Grown program: *
We are a developing produce Market Farm, having participated in the Bonners Ferry Farmers Market for the 2018-2019 seasons, and are growing our operation to add 2-3 new local markets in addition to a year round local CSA offering. We were encouraged to pursue Certified Naturally Grown by our local Boundary County University of Idaho Extension office and the Rural Roots Cultivating Success Workshop, which we attended and in which several mentor farmers, both Certified Organic and Certified Naturally Grown discussed both options. We also attended a Certified Organic workshop, and decided to add our name to the ISDA waiting list to become Certified Organic, because we think it will help us in our markets. Although, we have struggled with how the 'small farm' and 'local' intent with the original spirit of the Organic movement has gotten lost in the Certified Organic process, so see the added value of becoming Certified Naturally Grown, and using that to further educate our customer base on why we think that is important to our local community.

Well, we had a fungus scare with our garlic crop this last season, and immediately consulted our supplier and University of Idaho Extension office, followed by soil/plant testing and onsite visit by UI Plant Pathologist to confirm it wasn't our worst fear, subsequently removing/burning infected plants/bulbs. Ongoing procedures focus on minimizing offsite introduction of disease through careful cleaning of tools/clothing, only growing our own starts, and educating the community on the hazards of 'trading' crops to minimize the spread of diseases. We adhere to a strict schedule of rotating crops, and composting organic material to proper temps.

Chemical/Spray Drift and Buffers:
Is there any likelihood of Chemical/Spray drift contamination of your fields? *
no
Do you have an adequate buffer to protect yourself from potential contamination? *
yes
Please describe your buffer. Be as specific as possible. On all sides, how far is it from your crops to the next closest use (road, conventional crop, residential yard)? Be sure to specify what is grown on neighboring land that is in agricultural use. For example: To the north and east, a wooded area of at least 100 yards separates us from the neighbor's corn fields, to the south is a fallow field at least 100 yards deep separating us from the road, and to the west about 60 feet separates our crops from a field where conventional corn and soybeans are grown. *
We are isolated! It is a half mile to the nearest house/road, and over a mile to the nearest farm, which is also at least 500 feet below our location. We have hundred of acres of forest land surrounding our farm, with no occupancy nor activity nor development.
