- Shalom Farms is a nonprofit farm located in Powhatan County that works with communities in Richmond to ensure access to healthy food. Shalom Farms' volunteer program reaches almost 6000 people annually, through which we have the ability to educate visitors and emphasize growing practices that are biologically active and fertile. By being certified, we can continue to promote sustainable production methods by maintaining the health of the land and soil while having support from and supporting CNG.

- We deal with a wide variety of weed species on the farm (mostly cress, chickweed, nettle). To manage, we use landscape fabric, Bio360 Mater-Bi* plastic mulch to suppress weeds initially, then hand hoeing and weeding is done throughout the season for maintenance. (Usually the Bio360 breaks down in about 3 months for us, depending on weather. When it's really cold, it may take a bit longer, but we till and spade so it's incorporated back into the soil where it biodegrades pretty quickly.

- We deal with a variety of pests (mostly aphids, flea beetles, harlequin beetles, cabbage moths and worms, army worms, squash beetles, tomato horn worms, cut worms, root maggots, stink bugs, cucumber beetles). Soil fertility is our first management process for keeping pests at bay, the next being extensive planting successions in our field plan to keep our foliar sprays to a minimum, and row cover. Next would be sprays which include - pyganic 1.4% and Monterey Spinosad (used when visible signs of damage to plant is evident and is effecting yields, dependent on which part of the plant is being effected).

- Primary disease challenges are powdery and downy mildew, early blight, septoria leaf spot, bacterial leaf spot. Management for prevention and early onset stages include keeping a tidy farm, cleaning after harvest, proper spacing, biodegradeable plastic mulch, row cover, and OMNI approved broad spectrum bactericides/fungicides.

Be sure to specify what is grown on neighboring land that is in agricultural use. For example: To the north and east, a wooded area of at least 100 yards separates us from the neighbor's corn fields, to the south is a fallow field at least 100 yards deep separating us from the road, and to the west about 60 feet separates our crops from a field where conventional corn and soybeans are grown. *
- We have two locations, one in Powhatan County and the other in Richmond city. Powhatan is our major production site and we are currently navigating how to best use the urban site. Westwood site - the adjacent land is all residential (north, south, east, and west), with a road just to the south. The rest of the area is pretty enclosed and sits in the middle of some houses. We cover cropped last fall and let it overwinter. Powhatan Site - the adjacent land north is a hay field with a treeline just beyond it, south is another hay field, west is a 6 acre buffer zone 200' wide with a tree line on the far side, east is used for conventional production with multiple buildings, a road, and open space as the buffer zone. We are in good communication with the people who manage that conventional tract. 2017 was our first year of production at this site, and we are now in our second season. We cover cropped our growing area for the year prior to being on it.
