We have been growing produce at our farm for over 20 years. We have tried to follow organic farming practices during this 20 year period. We feel the Certified Naturally Grown certification will fit well with the direction we want our farm to continue into the future.

Farmland Management and Practices

Purchase from New Earth Compost. Also use leaf/grass clippings from our farm.

Tennessee Brown Rock, Azomite, Kelp meal and Greensand (all are organic approved fertilizers). We mix these 4 additions to our own vermicompost and peat moss. We add well water to integrate all 6 ingredients. This becomes our potting soil used to plant our organic seeds that we purchase from Johnny's Seeds, Highmowing Seeds or Fedco Seeds. In main garden, use non-gmo soybean meal, Sulfate of potash, and elemental sulfur, mixed according to soil test recommendations.

Main insect pressure from flea beetles, squash bugs, vine borer, blister beetle and harlequin bug. We use diatamaceous earth for the flea beetle. We hand pick squash bugs, vine borer, blister beetle and harlequin bug and their eggs.

tomato blight and septorial leafspot. We use a copper soap spray for septorial leaf spot (we spray tomato plants 2 or 3 times in a season), we control blight by using less susceptible cultivars and by removing dead vines from the field and burning them.

Seeds, Transplants and Buffers

How do you select your seeds? CNG standards call for growers to make a good faith effort to locate organically grown seeds by contacting at least 3 major suppliers. *

Chemical/Spray Drift and Buffers:

Do you have an adequate buffer to protect yourself from potential contamination? *
Please describe your buffer. Be as specific as possible. On all sides, how far is it from your crops to the next closest use (road, conventional crop, residential yard)? Be sure to specify what is grown on neighboring land that is in agricultural use. For example: To the north and east, a wooded area of at least 100 yards separates us from the neighbor's corn fields, to the south is a fallow field at least 100 yards deep separating us from the road, and to the west about 60 feet separates our crops from a field where conventional corn and soybeans are grown. *
In the first 50 feet from our garden, on the south, southwest, west, northwest and north positions, the land is our own farmland. To the northeast, there is a small woods, then comes a fallow hay field owned by an individual. Directly east and adjacent to our garden is the neighbor's fallow hay field. We have not seen this field worked in any type of way for over 6 years.
