I like to let my chickens into the garden once a week for about an hour or two before sunset, it gives them enough time to scratch around but not enough time to rip everything apart. About 6 years ago I used to have a heck of a time with Japanese Beetles devouring my grapes, but not even Diotomacious Earth would stop them so I pulled all the grapes out and don’t grow them anymore.

The biggest problem I have had is with tomatoes and rot. The Lower leaves will get brown, but I don’t do anything. The fruits end up being pretty ugly, but since I cook them all down, I am not concerned with how they look.

Please describe your buffer. Be as specific as possible. On all sides, how far is it from your crops to the next closest use (road, conventional crop, residential yard)? Be sure to specify what is grown on neighboring land that is in agricultural use. For example: To the north and east, a wooded area of at least 100 yards separates us from the neighbor's corn fields, to the south is a fallow field at least 100 yards deep separating us from the road, and to the west about 60 feet separates our crops from a field where conventional corn and soybeans are grown. *
We live in the mountains with no fields, crops, farms, etc., anywhere near us. We are surrounded by trees, and our land sits on top of a small hill.
