The Bend Farm
Oil City, Pennsylvania
Food grown at The Bend Farm is grown with two major objectives in mind. First, we grow food that is of excellent quality, which we harvest at the peak of it's maturity to ensure that customers are getting the best possible flavor and nutritional value. Secondly, we grow our food using small-scale, sustainable farming methods and without the use of any synthetic chemicals because we firmly believe that this is the best thing we can do for our bodies and our environment.
We farm without the use of synthetic pesticides, fungicides, herbicides or fertilizers, in other words, without the use of any synthetic chemicals at all. It's good for the soil and it's good for our bodies.
Farming sustainably means that we adhere to farming practices that would allow us to cultivate the same plot of land indefinitely without depleting it of its resources. We view the farm as an eco-system. Eco-systems are closed systems in which nothing gets wasted and in which each part of the system works synergistically with the rest of the system.
The Bend Farm grower and owner, Dan Touchard, worked as a professionally trained chef for many years before deciding to grow food instead of cooking it. Dan's vegetable variety selections, cultivation, and storage practices are all geared towards ensuring ultimate quality and flavor for our customers.
We choose Certified Naturally Grown because we want to demonstrate our commitment to sustainable and synthetic chemical-free growing practices. We are a tiny farm and the USDA's organic certification is out of reach for us. We are happy to become part of the CNG community and we hope to watch it grow.
