Urban Roots Farm

Springfield, Missouri

Melissa and Adam have been growing food at Urban Roots Farm since 2010. Prior to farming Mel and Adam owned and operated a landscaping business for 3 years. Once they decided to expand the family Mel choose to stay at home and Adam began working at Paul Mueller. The farm became a dream once Adam was laid off along with 1200 other employees and the family needed to make some major changes. At that time they set forth to create an urban farm on a blighted piece of property in a challenging neighborhood. After much work (8 months) with the local government to amend zoning codes it was time to break ground. Along side starting the farm they founded a non profit called Springfield Urban Agriculture Coalition with a great team of local leaders and friends. Mel served as the Ex. Director for this organization and Adam picked up temp work as well as farming for the first time until March of 2012. SInce then the couple has been full time on the farm with a year round CSA and are vendors at Farmer Market of the Ozarks. They are only utilizing 3/4 of an acre at this time and hope to expand in 2015 to a full acre.

Personal note:
"We believe in growing vegetables for our community as naturally as possible. We eat the veggies we grow, and our children eat the veggies we grow, so we don't ever use synthetic chemicals. We want to live in a vibrant community, and we want this earth to remain a great place to live indefinitely, so we are always mindful of the impact our actions have on our community, and our environment."
