Applicant Details

Please briefly tell us why you are applying to be part of the Certified Naturally Grown program: *
My wife and I have 15 acres and have become aware of all the chemicals and unnatural substances we put in our bodies more times that not unknowingly through our current food supply methods. We want to farm our land and provide a wholesome product (free of chemicals and GMOs) for us as well as others. This application and effort toward Certified Naturally Grown is an important process to us to achieve that goal.

Do you use Compost? *
yes
If yes, please note general sources (on farm, purchased complete, local grass clippings, local dairy, etc.): *
I have horses and chickens on the farm. Plan to create my own compost from horse manure and chicken manure.
Please list application rates. Give a specific amount or range (for example: one to two tons per acre, ten wheelbarrow loads per 1,000 square feet, or 1-2 inches deep). Do not answer "varies". *

If yes, please note general sources (local dairy, horse farm, etc.): *
I have my own sources here on the farm horse and chicken manure.

No other brought in sources. I plan to probably use an approve source of lime as required.

no
Have any non-acceptable pesticides and/or herbicides been applied to these fields in the last 3 years? *

Describe your primary weed problems AND methods of control. Do not answer "none". You MUST indicate either actual weed challenges and/or LIKELY challenges, and you must ALSO indicate how you manage (or would manage) them. If you indicate a product, also specify how often it's used. *
I believe my challenges will be if I use any raw manure that will bring a host of new weeds in the field. I will manage by tillage, straw, manual removal hand pulling. In the future I may employ an approved row cover plastic (and understand the requirements for disposal).
Describe your primary insect challenges AND methods of control. Do not answer "none". You MUST indicate either actual pest challenges and/or LIKELY challenges, and you must ALSO indicate how you manage (or would manage) them. If you indicate a product, also specify how often it's used. *
Our biggest issues have been the deer. My solution to this issue was to employ Nite-Guard Lites, they appear to work great. You have to move them around on a regular basis so that the deer to not get use to them being in the same place. As to the 6 legged type. We have been very fortunate in this area. We naturally have thousands of lady bugs early spring and to some extend continue all summer. Tilling in our summer garden ever now we are seeing some of the lady bugs. We also have some of the little scavenger wasp that take care of unwanted pest. The only thing that we have seen this year was some squash bugs, and stink bugs. We used no pestisides either organic or other in removing. We removed by hand and checked for eggs under the squash plants again removed by hand. If challenges arise, we will make sure any sprays we use meet CNG standards.
Describe your primary disease challenges AND methods of control. Do not answer "none". You MUST indicate either actual disease challenges and/or LIKELY challenges, and you must ALSO indicate how you manage (or would manage) them. If you indicate a product, also specify how often it's used. *
My challenge (I have already experienced) anthracnose in my tomatoes. I can minimize this by proper rotation of crops and not to turn my tomato plants back into the soil. At this point this is the only disease challenge that I foresee.
Please list the water source you use for crop irrigation. If source is public river, pond or lake, please note the name: *
I have a deep well I plan to use.
Are there any known contaminants in the irrigation water? *
no
Are you a maple producer who seeks to certify your sugarbush? *
no

Seeds, Transplants and Buffers

Do you purchase or grow using any Genetically Modified seeds? *
no
Do you use any chemically treated seeds in your operation? *
no
Do you grow your own transplants? *
yes
Are they grown using Naturally Grown/Organic methods? *
yes
If they're not grown according to CNG methods, please list them here. This produce may not be sold as Certified Naturally Grown. (If they are, put "N/A") *
I will use CNG Methods.
Do you purchase any transplants from outside sources? *
no
Chemical/Spray Drift and Buffers:
Is there any likelihood of Chemical/Spray drift contamination of your fields? *
no
Do you have an adequate buffer to protect yourself from potential contamination? *
yes
Please describe your buffer. Be as specific as possible. On all sides, how far is it from your crops to the next closest use (road, conventional crop, residential yard)? Be sure to specify what is grown on neighboring land that is in agricultural use. For example: To the north and east, a wooded area of at least 100 yards separates us from the neighbor's corn fields, to the south is a fallow field at least 100 yards deep separating us from the road, and to the west about 60 feet separates our crops from a field where conventional corn and soybeans are grown. *
To my north Ga Highway 88 will be my border and I will be at least 100yds from that. To the east neighbors hay field borders my field my crops will be at least 100 yds from my crops. To the west another hay field with 100 yds wood area separates my crops. To the south is a tree row, then my house/yard and approx. 400 yds to my back pasture.

Agreements

Please indicate your agreement with the following statements by checking the boxes.
I will not label, or in any way lead consumers to believe that produce not raised in accord with CNG standards is Certified Naturally GrownTM. *
I understand that I have to complete at least one (and hopefully more) Certification Inspection(s) of another farm in my area each year, and that the inspection will NOT be of the same farmer that inspected me. *
I have reviewed the Certified Naturally Grown certification standards, I understand them, and I will abide by them. I understand that if I have any questions I may contact CNG for clarification. *
You may use this space to tell us anything else you think we should know about your farm:
The area I plan to farm has not had any crops for at least 20 to 25 years. The property has had horsed on it for the years mentioned. Property has not been tilled or broken for all this time. I have discussed this with my next door neighbor who once owned the land. My wife and I seek this certification to be part of the movement of natural, clean, and no GMOs food source for ourselves and our community.
