West Broad Market Garden & Williams Farm of ALT
Thanks to the generosity of the Clarke County School District, in March of 2012 the Athens Land Trust broke ground on Athens' first-ever community-based urban farm, located on the former playground of the historic West Broad School. The West Broad Market Garden (WBMG) is a 1/2-acre farm utilizing biointensive growing methods to help support the West Broad Farmers Market and educate the community. The garden is managed and maintained by Athens Land Trust staff member Rebecca Ennis and garden neighbor/farm management trainee Ethel Collins, who are supported in their work by a rotating group of community- and university-based volunteers.
The Williams Farm comprises a 1/2-acre of cultivated land located a short distance from downtown Athens. Its mission includes: Growing and marketing affordable produce to community members and businesses; utilizing organic and sustainable production methods to generate a self-sustaining income; serving as a model whereby the community will be able to learn about the importance of sustainable farming, healthy diets, and the value of smart and equitable land use; and providing employment and skill-building opportunities to underserved youth and the low-income community, while contributing to the local economy.
